Suomenlinnan Lelumuseon vanhimmat esineet ovat 1800-luvulta, vanhin nukke on 1830-luvulta. Aikajana päättyy Neuvostoliiton romahdukseen. Museotila on pieni, mutta täällä on 20 vitriinillistä lelutavaraa, katsottavaa kyllä riittää kunhan jaksaa paneutua yksityiskohtiin. Vitriineissä on muutamia suoraan johonkin esineeseen viittavia infoja, mutta tähän blogiin olen koonnut kirjoittamiani juttuja niistä lelumaailman aiheista, jotka ovat ilmiöinä ja kokonaisuuksina kiinnostavia.

The oldest items in this collection date back to the early 19th century and the oldest doll originates from the 1830s. The timeline stops with the fall of the Soviet Union. There is some small information in the cabinets about some items. This blog gives you a bigger picture about the toy industry, trends in gaming, and some back grounds to understand why collecting toy history is so important.

Minä, museonjohtaja, keräilijä ja yrittäjä Petra Tandefelt (s.1966 Helsinki) elän ja hengitän näitä vanhoja leluja. Ne ovat muodostaneet turvallisen, hiljaisen perheen ympärilleni lapsuudestani asti. Koska olen yksityinen keräilijä, teen museoon vain hankintoja jotka minua itseäni kiinnostavat – omilla rahoillanihan keräilen. Yrittäjän tulo on yrittäjän palkka, suurkiitos teille museovieraat! Toivon, että rakkauteni tähän hommaan näkyy kaikessa mitä teen, niin museossa, museokahvilassa kuin museokaupassakin.

Suomenlinnan Lelumuseon perusti vuonna 1985 äitini, taiteilija Piippa Tandefelt (s.1939 Sortavala). Ensimmäiset vanhat leikkikalut äiti osti alun perin mukamas minulle, kun olin vielä ihan pieni.
Myöhemmin äiti hylkäsi keramiikkataiteilijan työnsä, ja alkoi pitää pientä antiikkikauppaa Helsingin Pietarinkadulla. Kaupan nimi oli Petruska. Näin äiti pääsi työkseen keräilemään vanhoja leluja ja uppoutumaan vanhojen tavaroiden maailmaan muutenkin.
Vuonna 1979 Pohjoismainen taidekeskus pyysi tätä antiikkilelujen kokoelmaa Unescon lapsenvuoden teemanäyttelyyn Suomenlinnan Rantakasarmiin. Näyttely oli menestys, ja se poiki toivomuksia siitä, että nämä vanhat lelut olisivat vakituisesti nähtävillä. Meillä käy vieläkin asiakkaita jotka muistavat tuon näyttelyn!
Suomenlinnan Lelumuseo avattiin vuonna 1985 kotitalomme pohjakerrokseen museolle rakennettuihin tiloihin, museo on ollut tässä samassa paikassa siitä lähtien. Talomme on yksi harvoista Suomenlinnan puuhuviloista, täysin omin voimin peruskorjattu yksityinen rakennus vuodelta 1911. Asun perheineni rakennuksen ylemmissä kerroksissa.

The Suomenlinna Toy Museum was established by my mother, the artist Piippa Tandefelt (b.1939) in 1985. The first old toys were the ones she had bought for me in my earliest years. Later my mother abandoned her work as a ceramic artist and ran a small antique shop on Pietarinkatu in Helsinki. The shop was called Petruska. Thus, my mother had a chance to collect old toys as a profession and become otherwise immersed in the world of old objects.
In 1979 the Nordic Arts Centre asked her to display this collection of antique toys in the thematic UNESCO International Year of the Child exhibition on Suomenlinna Jetty Barracks. The exhibition was a success and we received many requests for these old toys to be on show in a permanent exhibition. We still have visitors that remember that exhibition!
The Suomenlinna Toy Museum opened in 1985 on the ground floor of our family home in rooms specially modified for the museum and it has operated here ever since. Our house is one of the few wooden villas in Suomenlinna, a private building dating back to 1911 that has been fully renovated by our family. I live there upstairs.
Vuoden 2003 sukupolvenvaihdoksen jälkeen, kokoelmasta ja keräilystä huolehdin nyt minä. Lelukokoelmaa on kerätty nyt yli 50 vuotta, ja sitä kartutetaan edelleen. Tila vain ei tahdo enää riittää. Olen laajentanut näyttelytilaa jo kaksi kertaa, nyt on ihan joka neliö pohjakerroksesta käytössä.
Museo toimii edelleen toiminimellä, ja on 100% omavarainen. Mutta kukaan ei Suomessa elä pelkästään museolippuja myymällä. Aikoinaan museon yhteyteen perustettiin pieni museokahvila, jonka myöhemmin nimesin Samovarbariksi – olenhan vannoutunut teeihminen. Kahvila teettää paljon työtä, mutta osaltaan mahdollistaa kokoelman esilläolon.
Lelumuseon museokauppa on erikoistunut vanhojen eurooppalaisten valmistajien tuotteisiin, kuten Teddy-karhut, suupuhalletut lasikoristeet ja paperimassatuotteet. Olen myös käynyt itse näissä kaikissa vanhoissa tehtaissa, joiden tuotteita tilaan museokauppaani.

In 2003 the generations swapped roles and now I am in charge of the collection, as well as collecting. This toy collection is now over 50 years old and it continues to grow. The only problem is space. I have expanded the exhibition space twice already – every single inch of the ground floor has been put to use.
The museum still runs under the same name and is 100% privately owned. But no one in Finland can live off museum ticket sales. Some time ago a small Museum Café was established that – as a tea-lover – I named Café Samovarbar. The café demands a lot of work, but also keeps the collection open.
The museum shop specialises in products by old European makers, for example, Teddy bears, blown glass decorations, and paper-mache products. I have visited all the old German factories whose products are on sale in the museum shop.
Museossa vierailee noin 30.000 kävijää vuosittain. Lelumuseolla ja sen Samovarbarilla on uskollisia asiakkaita ympäri maailmaa. Ole sinäkin!

I, Petra Tandefelt (b.1966) live and breathe these old toys. Ever since my childhood they have formed a silent, yet stable and secure family circle around me. Because I am a private collector and am spending my own money I buy toys that I am drawn to. The entrepreneur’s revenue makes the entrepreneur’s wages. Dear visitors, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! I hope that the love that I have for this project is visible in everything I do – the museum, the museum cafe as well as the museum store.
