Amerikkalainen G.I. Joe aloitti toimintahahmojen esiinmarssin, mutta matka oli kivinen. Aluksi kukaan ei uskonut niin sanottuun poikien nukkeen. Ajatuslaatikosta päästiin ulos vasta kun Hasbrolla (Hassenfeld Bros. Inc.) keksittiin kiertää sana nukke ilmaisulla Action Figure. Myytti nukeilla leikkimättömistä pojista murtui vuonna 1964.
Oli tärkeää että toimintahahmoa saattoi muotoilla erilaisiin asentoihin, ja kuten kunnon sotilaan kuuluu, sen piti myös pysyä niissä asennoissa. Ensimmäisellä G.I.Joella oli 21 vartalon osaa ja oikea tukka. Nukke nimettiin G.I. Joeksi, joka oli vakiintunut toisessa maailmansodassa tarkoittamaan mattimeikäläissotilasta.
Nuken lanseerauskampanjasta televisiossa jäi päähän soimaan rallatus “G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe, fighting man from head to toe! On the land, on the sea, in the air!” Seuraavaksi lanseerattiin G.I. Joe Club, johon liittyi vuoden 1964 loppuun mennessä 150.000 amerikkalaislasta. Yli kaksi miljoonaa toimintahahmoa myytiin saman tien.
Arpi nuken poskeen keksittiin kopioimisen pelossa, kun etsittiin yhteistyökumppaneita Japanissa. Näin se olisi selkeästi omaleimainen. Tosin sitä on valmistettu joitakin eriä myös ilman arpea.
Action Man on tutumpi meille suomalaisille. Nämä toimintasankarithan ovat identtiset kaksoset. Action Manin taustalta löytyy brittiläinen Palitoy, joka alkoi valmistaa nukkea Hasbron myöntämällä lisenssillä vuonna 1966. Oman lisänsä Palitoy toi keksimällä Action Manille taipuvat kämmenet, joilla tietysti pystyi tarttumaan paremmin aseisiin. Harmillisesti kämmenien materiaali kovettuu ja hapristuu ajan myötä.

G.I. Joe marked the launch of action figures, but it has been a rocky road. At first no one believed in so-called, boys’ dolls. The line was not crossed until Hasbro (Hassenfeld Bros. Inc.) thought of replacing the word doll with action figure. The myth of boys not playing with dolls was destroyed in 1964.
It was essential that the action figure could be put into different body positions and like a proper soldier that it stayed in these positions. The first G.I. Joe had 21 body parts and real hair. It was called G.I. Joe after the generic name for American soldiers in World War II.
The television campaign turned the chant “G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe, fighting man from head to toe, on the land, on the sea, in the air” into haunting jingle. Next the G.I. Joe Club was launched, and by the end of 1964 it had 150 000 members. Over two million soldier figures were sold.
When the company was looking for a partner in Japan the scar on Joe’s cheek was designed to prevent copying. This way the doll would be clearly distinguishable. However, some product lines have been also made without the scar.
Action Man is more familiar in Finland. These action heroes were virtually identical twins. Palitoy, a British company, and the force behind Action Man, started making the doll under license from Hasbro in 1966. As a new addition Palitoy invented gripping hands that were very useful for handling guns. Unfortunately, the material used for the hands hardened and deteriorated over time.
